The first Christians came from a diverse background - Jews and Gentiles. Many Gentiles worshipped many different gods – Greek and Roman. The lack of widespread Christian literature in the early stages of the growth of Christianity led to many different interpretations of the Christian faith. This led to disunity between the different communities that sprang up over the Roman Empire.
